NYSC Camp Proposal: COAS orders release of detained female soldier
The Chief of Army Staff has ordered the release of a female soldier who had been jailed following a love proposal from a young corporal.
Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya, the Chief of Army Staff, has ordered the immediate release of Pte. Hannah Sofiat, a female soldier who was arrested a few weeks ago for accepting a marriage proposal from a male corps member at the National Youth Service Corps Orientation Camp in Yikpata, Kwara.
According to Nigerian Army sources, the COAS requested her release in the spirit of the holiday season.
Sofiat had previously been jailed for breaking military rules and regulations by displaying an intimate relationship with a paramilitary trainee, a corps member, in public. After video recordings of her accepting a marriage proposal from a male corps member at the NYSC orientation camp in Kwara became popular on social media, she was imprisoned.
The Nigerian Army had been urged to free the female soldier by a number of organizations and individuals.
